Amnesty International Group 15 meets at First Parish at 7 pm. on the third Tuesday of each month except July and works on the case for an adopted prisoner of conscience. Typically a dozen of us including several members of First Parish are at the meeting there, we write letters on behalf of our adopted prisoners of conscience, and also as a part of worldwide-coordinated "Urgent Action" cases, which address the plight of people around the world in immediate danger because of their ideas and their non-violent work on behalf of those ideas. We also work on death penalty cases and issues; and, when appropriate, speak up on immigration cases where political refugees have been denied their right of asylum. These cases have involved individuals in the Soviet Union, the Philippines, Chad, Egypt, Pakistan and China. Through our efforts, and those of other groups, a number of these prisoners have been released or received shortened sentences.

Our public outreach includes such things as a torchlight evening parade on behalf of our Pakistani prisoner, enlisting the help of Congressman Marty Meehan with our Egypt case, putting on a play called "An Unfair Trial" dramatizing the unfair trials many around the world receive, and participating in the July 4th "Picnic in the Park.
