Programs for Children

Our Cooperative Sunday Morning Programs

Children and their parents/guardians make our religious education program successful at First Parish. At both the 9:00 and 11:00 o'clock services, children explore their own spiritual lives in meaningful ways, with the active involvement and support of caring adults who participate in a variety of roles as teachers, workshop leaders and guides, creative arts leaders, social action leaders and more.

Spirit Play - Combined Kindergarten and First Grade Class

Spirit Play is a powerful medium for telling oral stories to children. These stories will explore our Unitarian Universalist values, principles and history as well as biblical stories from the Hebrew Scriptures and Gospels.

Children of this age begin worship with their parents in the sanctuary and are escorted to their classrooms after the 'Message to Children'.

Religious Education for 2nd - 6th Grades Honoring the Earth

The Honoring the Earth curriculum focuses on our home, the planet earth, and explores four of our Unitarian Universalist sources:  Earth-Centered traditions, Humanism, Prophetic Men and Women, and the Transcendental Mystery.    Through nature, seasons,  people, and science, children celebrate the beauty of our world and how we can be pro-active in protecting it for the future.

There are four pillars (or themes) that will be covered throughout the year.  Each term will focus on one of these pillars:

  1. Fall Term:  The Ground Below Us
  2. Holiday Term:  The Fire within Us
  3. Winter Term:  The Air Around Us
  4. Spring Term: The Water Around Us

Children in second through sixth grade start in the Sanctuary with their families.  Following the Children’s Message the children leave the Sanctuary for the planned activity in RE.

Our Workshop Rotation Program is altered this year as our religious education classrooms are being rebuilt.  We have the opportunity to focus on workshops offering multi-age group experiences for 2nd – 6th graders.  There will also be small group work with leadership experiences for older grades.
