Women's Retreats

The annual Women's Retreats will take place January 22-24 and January 29-31. Haitian Relief

The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee and the UUA have set up an emergency relief fund for Haiti. Go to www.uusc.org for details.

Women's AM/PM Book Group

The first book of the New Year for the Women's Book Group is Infidel, by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. The evening discussion will be Monday, January 25, 7:30 to 9:00 p.m.; and the morning discussion, on Tuesday, January 26, 9:30 to 11:00 a.m., with both meetings at First Parish. All women of First Parish are warmly invited to read the current book and join one or both of these discussions.

Sabbatical Reminder

Rev. Jenny Rankin will be on sabbatical leavefrom February 1 to May 1, 2010.

Congregational Meeting

The members of the Standing Committee invite all parishioners to join them for a congregational meeting today after the 11:00 o'clock service, to discuss the process we will utilize following Gary's announcement of his coming retirement. We will be joined by Susan Beaumont, a consultant with the Alban Institute, whom we have engaged to help lead us through what promises to be a period of reflection and decision making, to be accomplished over the next few months.

Young Activist Grants

SAC invites 6th-8th graders to participate in a four-week program to research and award a SAC grant of $750 to one nonprofit organization. The youth will divide into teams to research their options for four Sundays, from 10 to 1l a.m. (1/24, 1/31, 2/7 and 2/28). The fifth meeting will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday, February 28, at First Parish for final presentations and the award. Funderburg Scholars Dinner

Join us on Saturday, February 6, for the Funderburg Scholars dinner at church. Help Roxbury youth apply to and graduate from college-while you enjoy a nice meal with great company! Meet some Roxbury students and learn more about the program. No fixed price-donate what feels right to you at the dinner. Volunteer Orientation for MCI Concord

Adults interested in volunteering at MCI Concord need to attend an orientation at the prison. The next orientation will be held on Thursday, January 21, at 6 p.m. at MCI Concord. If you are interested, call Lenore at 978-369-1430 and leave your name with her. She will tell the prison how many people to expect. Those attending should park in the prison's large parking lot near the rotary and go in by the main entrance (which faces Route 2). Bring with you only your driver's license and car key, please. Most in demand now are a few fathers or couples to help with the weekly Monday night Fathers' Group and participants in the Alternatives to Violence Program.

All-Church SAC Event: Home Drop-Off Day, January 30

Volunteer to work or donate some goods. Clear out your clutter and recycle your items. All First Parish members (ages 5 years and up) are invited to volunteer for a shift between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. High schoolers, come earn community service hours! Collect items, spot clean, sort, lift and load! Soup will be on and First Parish talent will sing us into action! “Life in the Balance” Series Continues on January 22

The film to be shown on January 22 is entitled “The Great Squeeze: Surviving the Human Project.” It is a documentary film that explores our reliance on fossil fuels and the disastrous environmental and economic consequences that have resulted from it. The film was the official selection at the 2009 Environmental Film Festival and the 2009 Durango Independent Film Festival. The “Life in the Balance” series encourages people to learn, connect and act on climate change issues. The film will be shown at the Alcott School auditorium at 7 p.m. The series is brought to you by four collaborating groups dedicated to engaging and educating the public-the League of Women Voters of Concord and Carlisle, ConcordCAN, Carlisle Climate Action, and Concord-Carlisle Adult and Community Education.
