About Social Action

The First Parish Social Action Community (SAC) is organized to support of our congregation as we promote the Principles of Unitarian Universalism and live out our benediction, which states:

Go out into the world in peace
Have courage
Hold onto what is good
Return to no person evil for evil
Strengthen the fainthearted
Support the weak
Help the suffering
Honor all beings.

 

Our Social Action Community mission is to HEAL (Honor, Educate, Act, Lead) on social and environmental justice issues,

HONOR - To honor all beings and our spirituality, which inspires us to act.

EDUCATE - To deepen our spiritual awareness and educate on justice issues and the skills necessary to effectively take action.

ACT - To provide a variety of opportunities to act on social and environmental justice issues for all ages within First Parish.

LEAD - To create leaders in social and environmental justice.

 

The SAC organization consists of a 11 member Social Action Community Board, a Social Action Grants Committee, and numerous Social Action Programs. The SAC Board reorganized in 2007, building on the Social Action Special Task Force Report presented to the Standing Committee in January 2007. (Social Action Special Task Force Report).  The SAC Board now consists of approximately 5 teams working ons pecific tasks.  Strategic initiatives are ongoing.  The SAC Grants Committee distributes grant money collected annually from the congregation specifically to support Social Action programs locally, nationally, and internationally.  Grant deadlines are in the fall and spring of each year.

Current Board members are: Maile Hulihan (co-chair), Kim Novick (co-chair), Faith Bade (Social Action Program Director), Claudia Nimar, Alice Kaufman, Lynn Randall, Alec Walker, Jane Blumberg, Bob Andrews, Candace Nelson, Tom Wilson, and Rev. Jenny Rankin (ex-officio).
