Congratulations to Social Action Young Activists
The Social Action Young Activist Grants program culminated this past Sunday, February 28th, in presentations of three organizations. I want to thank our middle school age participants, Charlotte & Lily Wallis, Noa Ryan, Hadleigh Nunes and Charlotte Copp. These Young Activists did a great job and their presentations were highly informative! The final award was voted on and presented that day. Noa & Hadleigh were awarded $500 for The Akanksha Foundation (www.akanksha.org). Charlotte & Lily were awarded $125 for The Sierra Club (www.sierraclub.org <http://www.sierraclub.org/> ) and Charlotte Cop was awarded $125 for Pennies for Peace (www.penniesforpeace.org <http://www.penniesforpeace.org/> ).
The Akanksha Foundation supports education programs in India plus health education and disaster relief. The drop out rate of children in public Indian schools is 80% but only 10% in the Ankanksha schools! The Sierra Club supports a wide variety of environment programs with a focus on legislative action. They focus on reducing coal dependence, “green” transportation, conserving habitats, and limiting greenhouse emissions. Pennies for Peace grew out of Greg Mortenson’s Central Asia Institute and is widely recognized through his book Three Cups of Tea. The program supports children in grades K-12 in Afghanistan and Pakistan, focusing on the ability of pennies to make a significant difference in the lives of these people.
I want to congratulate them all on their hard work.
This program was created and sponsored by the First Parish in Concord Social Action Community Board.
